Historical Trends of Modern Warfare 3

Modern Warfare 3

Modern Warfare 3

Genre: FPS

Mode: Online Multiplayer

Release Date: November 10th, 2023

Description:Modern Warfare III merges a versatile single-player campaign with multiplayer modes, including maps from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, improved gameplay mechanics like map voting and "red dot" minimap, and introduces new and classic game modes. It features a 32v32 "Ground War" and a collaborative PvE Zombies mode in an open-world setting, designed with Treyarch to offer a dynamic experience for up to 24 players.

Historical Trends Summary

Continuing the trend of the Call of Duty franchise failing to regain the traction it once had in the gaming industry, Modern Warfare 3 has had a dismal history history, both pre- and post- launch. Even before its announcement, leaks and speculation was overwhelmingly negative, largely driven by journalists noticing that previous Modern Warfare 3 titles have not fared well either. Even post-launch coverage has been relatively negative, driven by a lackluster campaign, high price tag, and uncreative reskins of old maps. Whether the game will recover is yet to be seen, with recent reviews on steam at 40% as of January 2024.

Additional Observations

Modern Warfare has managed to recover from its crushingly low sentiment of 0.23 at announcement in August of 2023, reaching a high of 0.57 in January this year. Even before annoucement, speculation and leaks surrounding the game were starkly negative with the first month of coverage starting at 0.29 in May 2023 before hitting its low just a few months later. The titles main criticism was its high price tag of $70, which is quickly becoming the gaming industry's standard, in exchange for what many believe to be a lazy re-release of old titles with little gameplay improvement as well as a short and unmemorable campaign. Even when there were only rumors about the game's release, Cameron Swan from Game Rant predicted that a new Modern Warfare 3 would likely suffer a similar fate to its predecessors if launched. Modern Warfare 3's saving grace amongst the community is its new Zombies mode "Operation Deadbolt" which has be well received, as well as an entertaining multiplayer mode with a few new maps.

Prior to its launch, Modern Warfare 3 slow began to gain traction amongst the covered gaming news outlets, reaching its initial peak in August 2023 of 101 articles when outlets were covering the new features and opinions on what was shown in the titles trailer. At its release in November 2023, Modern Warfare 3 reached its peak of cover with a total of 288 articles. However, a combination of its dismal launch and burnout amongst the gaming community for Call of Duty titles has lead to a collapse in interest, falling to 144 articles in December the following month and only 5 articles in the first week of 2024.

Authors & Source Summary

Game Rant is far and away the most frequent new outlet covering Modern Warfare 3, with 604 or almost three-quarters of the articles being published by them. This staggering coverage has translated into both top three most positive and negative journalists all being from Game Rant.

Modern Warfare 3's sentiment is largely bouyed by articles from IGN and PCGamer, which both have significantly higher sentiment than the average. Even the number of unique journalists is unimpressively low, with sources like Kotaku fielding only three journalists as well as four articles with no publicized name.

Additional Observations

Game Rant is the dominating player in the coverage of Modern Warfare 3, not only claiming three quarters of the articles, but also 66% of the journalist with all of the top three most frequent journalists, Felister Moraa (80 articles), Richard Warren (66 articles), and Dakota Evans (62 articles). Even amongst other gaming news outlets, articles were largely concetrated amongst one or two journalists, with more than half of all IGN articles written by Wesley Yin-Poole (45 articles) and nearly 90% of articles by Gamespot written by Eddie Makuch (44 articles) and S.E. Doster (43 articles).

Modern Warfare 3's average game sentiment is largely dictated by the sheer capture of articles that Game Rant holds, hovering within just 0.02 points of Game Rants 0.36 negative score. IGN has a maintained a perfectly neutral stance at 0.50, while PCGamer has posted a somewhat positive sentiment at 0.71, although this likely a reflection of its low article volume.

Again, due to Game Rant's large capture of both journalists and articles, it is not unsurpising that the highest sentiment journalist, Marc Santos (17 articles) at 0.73, and the lowest sentiment journalist Akshay Patel (12 articles) at 0.03, are both published by the news outlet. Given that the third highest sentiment author, Derek Nichols (12 articles), only reached a score of 0.48 it will be a difficult turn around for Activision to achieve in the public opinion.
