Madden Franchise

Madden Franchise

Genre: Sports (American Football)

Mode: Single-player, Multiplayer

Release Date: First - June 1, 1988; Recent - August 18, 2023

Description:The Madden NFL video game franchise is a series of football simulation games that allows players to experience the National Football League (NFL) with realistic gameplay, teams, and players. It features various modes including career, franchise, and multiplayer, allowing players to manage teams, play through seasons, or compete against others. The games are known for their detailed graphics, accurate player stats, and strategic gameplay that mirrors real-life football tactics and plays.

Historical Trends Summary

The Madden Franchise is one of the most renowned titles in the gaming industry, both for its annual releases and constant innovation of gameplay mechanics and stunning visuals. Even its namesake, John Madden, described the game as "a way for people to learn the game and participate in the game at a pretty sophisticated level" due to its intricacy and staying faithful to the sport.

Popularity in the Madden Franchise has only continued to increase as the sport begins to garner greater interest internationally and amongst the younger generation who are more likely to play video games. Madden reached its peak article count of 62 a month in August of 2022.

Additional Observations

The Madden Franchise is largely cyclicle, with new titles being released on an annual basis in the month of August every year since 1999, the first year that Madden was introduced on both PC and Mac. This is evident in the life time chart above, which features a spike in article count to coinicide with each titles release. After reaching a high of 30 articles in August 2009, Madden began to fade from the spotlight and its article frequency began to decline. Interest in the title took off during the COVID-19 lockdowns, where interest in videogames went mainstream as people stuck at home were looking for new ways to pass the time.

Madden enjoys a high sentiment of 0.88, and has largely maintained that through its history. Historically, its sentiment only began to drop during periods of low article frequency, when it is prone to extreme movements. The lowest score it reached with a minimum 5 articles in a month was December of 2016, when multiple articles released by Game Rant and Gamespot covering the infamous "Madden Curse" were all published following Rob Gronkowskis injury.

However, sentiment in the game is on the rise as more innovative titles and game modes are released, such as the recently annouced college football title. In fact, in December of 2023 the Madden Franchise reached a perfect score of 1.0 for the first time since 2009. As the NFL pushes for international recognization, popularity in the game is expected to steadily increase into the future.

One journalist also managed to record a perfect sentiment score, while only one journalist posted a score below 0.50 while having more than 10 articles.

Additional Observations

Owen Good (323 articles) from Kotaku is by far the most prolific journalist covering the Madden Franchise, accounting for just over 18% of all articles published on the title. The next two largest journalists are both from Gamespot, with Eddie Makuch (226 articles) and Gamespot Staff (102 articles) taking the second and third spot, respectively. Consequently, it comprises all three of the highest sentiment journalists, one of which has a perfect score, Jerrad Wyche (17 articles), while two are one point off, Bishop Lister (12 articles) and Jonathan Ammerman (15 articles). Alternatively, Game Rant only has one of the lowest average setiment authors with a score of 0.73, Dalton Cooper (27 articles). This is still a mostly positive score, with only Ethan Gach (16 articles) from Kotaku posting an astounding low score of 0.39, which is also the only negative author covering the Madden Franchise.
