Historical Trends Summary

Given that this analysis covers the entire history of the Halo franchise, it is fascinating to see how its coverage has transformed since its initial release. Coverage of the Halo franchise has been steady for most of its existence, only reaching new highs following the out break of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, since due to the series extensive history, it is easy to observe periods of increase and declining sentiment in relation to the announcement and delivery of new titles. Historically the game has held relatively high sentiment, which is a testment to its continue popularity in the modern gaming community.

Additional Observations

News of the first Halo title being release can be traced back as far as April of 2000, when Sam Kennedy from Gamespot confirmed the future release of a futuristic combat game titled Halo heading for the PlayStation 2. Interestingly enough this is the only article that Sam Kennedy has written about the franchise. This marked the beginning of a long journey of coverage of the series, with a total of 1 article being recorded on its initial release in November of 2021 according to our data. Compare this to the most recent release of Halo Infinite, which saw a whopping 453 articles published the month of its release.

The release of Halo Infinite was by far the most covered release of a Halo title, with the next largest month for published articles being in July of 2020, when Halo Infinite was announced to the public. The highest month for any other Halo release was for Halo 5: Guardians, which saw only 72 articles in October of 2020, roughly a sixth of Halo Infinite. The month of release for Halo Infinite saw a modest sentiment of 0.74, notably below its historical average. However, this has steadily recovered since, hitting a high of 0.99 in the first month of 2024.

However, covered of the Halo franchise is slowly declining since the last titles launch, hitting a four year low in September of 2023. Unless a new title is announced or game changing updates are presented to their current titles, coverage is likely to remain at historic lows for the foreseeable future.

Authors & Source Summary

Coverage of the Halo franchise has been dominated by three video game news outlets: Game Rant, Gamespot, and Kotaku. However, the diversity of journalists is not so evenly distributed, with the vast majority being published by Game Rant which features many smaller journalists rather than a handful of dominating figures.

Additionally, the spread of sentiment in relation to the franchise is rather divided, with the gap between the sentiments of the most positive and negative publishers spanning 0.13 points. This is reflected in the sentiment scores of the highest and lowest journalists that have more than 10 articles, with two journalists reporting perfectly positive scores, while one author saw a score in the single digits.

Additional Observations

Game Rant and Gamespot each have published approximately a third of all articles covering the Halo franchise, while Kotaku follows close behind at roughly a quarter. PCGamer and IGN both comprised less than 6% of the total articles published. However, the diversity of journalists did not follow a similar composition, with Game Rant publishing just over 45% of the unique journalists following the Halo franchise, while IGN and PCGamer were slightly more overrepresented with 12% and 9% of the journalists, respectively.

One journalist stands out amongst all the others for the sheer count of articles published. Eddie Makuch (1,030 articles) from Gamespot has published almost half of all articles published by Gamespot on the Halo franchise as well as 15% of the total articles published across all sources. For reference, the next most published journalist recorded is Luke Plunkett (316 articles) from Kotaku which is only a third of Eddie. Surprisingly, despite Game Rant being the largest publisher, none of its journalists make it into the five most published authors for the Halo franchise.

Game Rant's diversity is more notable when looking at the top three highest and lowest sentiment authors, which the news outlets comprises all of the most negative journalists and two of the most positive journalists. Two journalists recorded a perfectly positive score according to the data, Steven Petite (12 article) from Gamespot and Daniel Richardson (11 articles) from Game Rant. All three of the lowest sentiment journalists recorded negative sentiments below 0.50, CJ Kuzdal (22 articles) being incredibly pessimistic with a score in the single digits of 0.9 which is substantially below the next most critical journalist Charlie Stewart with a score of 0.33.
