Description:Cyberpunk 2077 is a first-person action RPG where players customize their mercenary, V, and choose from playstyles like Netrunner (hacking), Techie (machinery), or Solo (combat). The game encourages different approaches to gameplay and combat, enabling players to complete it without killing.
Historical Trends Summary
Although Cyberpunk 2077 was only officially released in December of 2020, it was first officially teased to the public all the way back in May of 2012, more than 8 years earlier. All spikes in activity largely correspond with any type of announcement, including the two spikes in 2018 and 2019 which coincided with trailers released at E3 each year. Although the game initially received positive sentiment leading up to its release, multiple delays and an infamusly unoptimized launch version sunk it's sentiment. Following a plethora of patches and free content released, Cyberpunk 2077 was able to largely recover its public image and has sold over 25 million copies as of 2023 in October.
Additional Observations
Despite a relatively low volume of articles leading up to its first gameplay trailers in 2018, Cyberpunk 2077 was able to maintain a high level of sentiment with little volaility, even maintaining a perfect score of 1.0 from June to August in 2014. This is most likely the result of hype and positive speculation surrounding the games release. Following a slight dip in sentiment due to low article volume, Cyberpunk 2077 began to receive more coverage in mid-2017 and the sentiment slowly began to rise in anticipation of its release. However, following a second sentiment peak of 0.99 in October of 2019, the games average monthly sentiment began to steadily decline as its release date was delayed three consecutive times and a disastrous launch on consoles.
Cyberpunk 2077 has since made a substantial recovery in public sentiment after bottoming in February of 2021, largely thanks to substantial patches and free content in the following months. Cyberpunk 2077 now enjoys high praise from the community for its thoughtful storyline and next-gen visuals, garnering a recent review score on Steam of 92% and a historic score of 81% as of January 2024.
The recent release of the DLC Phantom Liberty in September 2023 has resulted in the second largest spike in coverage, with a total of 256 articles and a relatively favorable sentiment score of 0.86, which swiftly dropped the next month before recovering again.

Authors & Source Summary
Cyberpunk 2077 has been predominantly covered by Game Rant, accounting for approximately 52% of all articles published. Game Rant has the greatest diversity of writers with 280 unique journalists, more than half of the total 511 recorded.
Although Cyberpunk 2077 has a high average historical sentiment of 0.84, this is largely skewed by the notoriously postive IGN with an average score of 0.89 which is more than 0.05 points higher. Kotaku, Game Rant, and PCGamer each recorded sentiment scores lower than the historical average, at 0.83, 0.83, and 0.82, respectively.
Additional Observations
Despite IGN comprising the smallest portion of articles covering Cyberpunk 2077, Andy Chalk (124 articles) is by far was the highest coverage author, followed by Eddie Makuch (111 articles) from Gamespot and Brittni Finley (86 articles) from Game Rant.
IGN currently boasts the highest average sentiment at a score of 0.89, which is not surprising given its place in video game coverage as a rather uncritical outlet. Kotaku, PCGamer, and Game Rant each hover just under the average sentiment score, with Gamespot at 0.86 which is just marginally higher.
Given Game Rant's diverse portfolio of journalists, it is not unsurprising that it holds all of the lowest average sentiment authors, as well as two out of the three highest average sentiment authors. Only Alan Dexter from PCGamer manages to crack the lists with an average sentiment score of 1.0 and a total of 11 articles. In fact, all three of the highest sentiment authors received the highest sentiment score possible, meaning that they most likely are rather uncritical and do not discuss any explitive content despite the violent nature of Cyberpunk 2077. Since scores tend to polarize on opposite sides of the sentiment score scale, authors must have published a minimum of 10 articles to be considered for the ranking.
