Apex Legends

Genre: Battle Royale, FPS

Mode: Multiplayer

Release Date: February 4th, 2019

Description: Apex Legends is a squad-based battle royale game where teams choose characters with unique abilities to be the last squad standing. Players can earn cosmetic items through gameplay, purchases, or events, and engage in matches involving strategy, resource scavenging, and combat. The game incorporates a shrinking play area, voice and text communication, and a unique ping system for streamlined team coordination.

Historical Trends Summary

Unlike most games that are announced ahead of time, Apex Legends was teased at the Super Bowl LLIII halftime, just one day before its release. This has resulted in a relatively short history of news coverage, but also propelled an early explosion in article count as all sources rushed to cover the surprise launch. The average sentiment has remained largely consistent since launch, with only minor variations based on the announcements of new content or bugs.

Additional Observations

Since its launch, its average monthly sentiment 0.72 has remained relatively consistent, with a high of 0.92 in July of 2023 and hitting its low in December of 2022, although it quickly rebounded. The sentiment high was most likely driven by relatively low article volume as well as the introduction of patches to balance the ranked system.

The average monthly article frequency has fluctuated substantially over it history, starting off at a high during its launch while quickly tapering off. Interest shortly began to rise again, peaking for a second time in March of 2021, coinciding with an early leak of the "War Games" themed event as well as a salvo of tips articles provided by all sources. This is also the same month that IGN released its review of the game, which likely generated substantial interest given IGN's popularity in the gaming community.

The frequency of coverage by news sources on APex Legends has been steadily declining over 2023, which is often seen in matured online FPS without the introduction of viral new content.

Authors & Source Summary

Apex Legends has been predominantly covered by Game Rant and Gamespot, which combined account for nearly 80% of all articles published. Game Rant has the greatest diversity of writers with 194 unique journalists, more than half of the total 354 recorded.

With an average historical sentiment of 0.72, it is not unsurprising that most of the gaming news outlets hover within this score, only IGN managing to post a relatively higher score.

Additional Observations

Although Game Rant boasts the majority of articles written about Apex Legends, Gamespot features Jordan Ramée (233 Articles) and Claire Lewis (230 Articles), the second and third most active journalists for this game, respectively. Only Andy Chalk (78 Articles) from PCGamer squeezes into the top 10 most popular journalists apart from the two largest sources at fifth.

IGN currently boasts the highest average sentiment at a score of 0.80, which is not surprising given its place in video game coverage as a rather uncritical outlet. Kotaku, PCGamer, and Game Rant each hover within a sentiment score of 0.72 to 0.73, with Gamespot at 0.70 taking the lowest score.

Given Game Rant's diverse portfolio of journalists, it is not unsurprising that it holds all of the lowest average sentiment authors, as well as two out of the three highest average sentiment authors. Only Gita Jackson from Kotaku manages to crack the lists with an average sentiment score of 0.88 and a total of 29 articles. Since scores tend to polarize on opposite sides of the sentiment score scale, authors must have published a minimum of 10 articles to be considered for the ranking.
